- which brings back a flood of memories. I was a kid with a copy of that review, and I devoured it several times. If we wish to talk of how Bicycling! (exclamation point and all) used to be an influential publication, there's my personal note on it.

Both of my parents had decided to pursue additional degrees at that point, and I was asked what I wanted as a reward for spending a couple more years wearing hand-me-downs and eating Kraft macaroni and cheese. My response was that I wanted the bike of my choice ... and at the time, I visualized a DeRosa like the magazine article cited above, pearly white with the red trim and the little red hearts in the lugs and full Campagnolo ... never did get it, and it's just as well, now. Still, nice to be reminded of it, and I still carry that one in my head as a benchmark of what Italian bikes ought to be ...
