we hang most of the fleet from the front wheels. The row of hanging hooks is 25" from the wall, which allows two rows of shelving behind the bikes, for stuff not accessed too often. Also leaves room under the bikes for rollers, hydraulic jack, and similar "impedimenta." I tend to space at 18" (which is joist spacing). Can go closer by hanging alternate bikes from front wheel and back wheel..
