Steve,

The elan 12 speed hub is still available but in very limited supply at 135mm (i must verify). Sturmey Archer has a wonderful 7 speed mechanism that varies in width from my experience 127-130mm OD. Ratio spacing varies and is greater than 15% but with a small wheel bike like the Brompton with fast wheels you should find close gears unnecessary unless you do pace line work with it. The small wheels easily accelerate past these shift points on my Sturmey equipped Moulton making it a quite a favorite for the test riders.

Gear ratios for Sturmey 7 speed Listed Optimized for 44x22x700c (2to1) Gear Ratios 1: -40% = 32.40 Gear inches 2: -31% = 37.26 Gear inches 3: -20% = 43.20 Gear inches 4: 1:1 2.00x 27in= 54.00 Gear inches 5: +24% = 66.96 Gear inches 6: +45% = 78.30 Gear inches 7: +68% = 90.72 Gear inches

I can supply the hub on a limited basis.

Anyone know anything about the SRAM/Sachs Elan 12-speed Hub? I don't know when it was made but I understand it no longer is. I see mention of it on: http://www.sheldonbrown.com/seven_speed.html.

I'm looking for a hub gear with the narrowest possible spacing, and don't even care how many gears I end up with, so long as they're narrowly spaced, meaning no more than about 15% apart, preferrably half that.

I ask here because I don't think such a thing is still made, at least not in spacing under 135mm. Please, all you hub gear afficiandos, educate me a little as to what may be out there in the used or new marketplaces that might do what I want. The bike for this is my Brompton which currently has a recent vintage S/A 3-speed. I think the ratios are move like 25-30% there.

Many thanks in advance.
