I've been overhauling some of my bikes, and noticed that the original cottered bb on the 1960 Atala appears to be installed backwards, with the fixed cup on the drive side. With the cups reversed, both ends of the spindle are too short to allow the chainring to clear the chainstay.
Is this common? I'd always assumed the adjustable cup should go on the non-drive side.
