My tandem - a '79 LeJeune, by the way - is still set up in that manner. I don't think this is as popular a setup as in the past but it still gets discussed every once in a while on tandem-specific mailing lists (e.g. tandem@hobbes.ucsd.edu) I think it is generally most effective when a large amount of seated climbing is involved or when the two riders have much different levels of experience. In the latter case I've found it makes the combined pedal stroke much smoother. Fred Rednor Arlington, VA
