A variation (I think) of EKG is a "stress test", in which heart activity is monitored while one jogs on a treadmill as the speed and angle of the treadmill is made progressively more difficult. I had one after experiencing some chest pain, and happily the test ruled out heart problems. It is probably an excellent idea for us old farts over 50 to have one annually, or at least every couple of years. A colleague of mine had a severe heart problem diagnosed by this test and has now resumed all normal activities after successful surgery. Sorry for the diagression, Dale, but you did raise the subject, and it could literally be a matter of life and death.

Jerry Moos

On 5/31, I had a heart defect corrected with a minor surgical procedure. The defect was Wolff Parkinson White syndrome, which in my case, manifested itself on an EKG as a sort of arrhythmia. Although I would occasionally experience the symptoms (rapid heart rate), I never even knew I had the problem. It was found almost by accident when I was admited to the ER in early March because of severe chest pains (that were most likely not caused by the WPW).

Bottom line, if you've never had an EKG, talk to you doctor about having one. It's painless, and takes all of 30-60 seconds. It turns out I've had this defect my entire life, but never knew it until March.
