The only times I have encountered clear-coat overlay problems are when decals are produced without a top and/or a bottom clear protective decal film applied. Sometimes the volatility of the clear coat (ie acrylic or urethane paints) slowly eats into the unprotected decal when it is made with color toner, inkjet, or thermal wax. This is why I am pursuing the making of decals with a silk-screen 4 color (CMYK) printing process that is "sandwiched" between a top and bottom clear decal film.

Use of color toner, inkjet, or thermal wax colors do not provide long term viability for decals because over time and exposure to UV rays, heat, and light, the decal colors will start to shift with time. This is why water-transfer decals are the best choice in my opinion.
