I have two answers. I remember my head swivelling in the late '60s when I first saw a silver Cinelli and I couldn't understand how something that looked exactly like other bikes could appear so distinctive. The second experience was more complete: wandering into a bikeshop in New York just as the aero phase started(1979-80). The totality of the design statement, and the gorgeous teardrop tubes left me with a sense of wanting to recreate a collection of aero components and constantly restimulate that sense of wonder. How did they make them so beautiful? I have always loved riding bikes but these two experiences added a dimension of wonder and propelled me to think of bicycles as an extension of design history.
