Since I seldom get to go on long rides these days, my seat tube water bottle cages have disappeared to make room for a framefit pump, usually a Zefal hpx. If the ride is long or hot, then I take one of my two bikes with a pump nipple on the head tube and carry the slightly smaller Silca frame fit pump. If it's a big organized ride, and I can be sure of mooching a "real" pump from riders stopping to help, and I want to save weight or preserve the pristine lines of my machine, I carry a Torelli pocket pump for emergency back up. The Torelli works fine, but you will be pumping a long time to get the tire up to 70 psi! All other "pocket" pumps I've tried are too darn big to fit comfortably into a jersey pocket or a saddle bag. There's nothing wrong with cartridges, except that if I carried one, I'm sure I'd get two flats, two cartridges equals three flats, etc, etc. A pump, two tubes and a patch kit equals about 12 flat tires, so I feel better. Missouri roads tend to be pretty junky, unlike the beloved Michigan roads of memory, blessed by a bottle deposit law. Remember, even paranoids can have enemies!
Tom Adams, Kansas City, knowing there are glass shards, tacks and staples out there waiting, waiting, waiting---
I use a variety of Silca Pumps on my vintage bikes with pump braze-ons. I am curious, what do riders in the group use on bikes without braze on pump pegs or clips? I am loath to put pump clips on my older British bikes and have resorted to carrying (gasp) a gas cartridge!!! Any good pocket pumps out there?
cheers
