I hope the ListMeister isn't tooo angry with me for
cross-posting this note. I really do think that CR folks
are likely to be interested in this...even though I posted
it to the iBOB. I promise no more rule breaking, Dale!
Here goes:
Given Jan Heine's fine piece on French Randonneuring bicycles
in the new RR, I thought to bring home the digital camera and
today posted new pictures of the recently completed '61 Rene
Herse Cyclotouriste 650b bike. This bike came to me as
pretty much a frame only. Jan, Grant Handley, and Mike Barry
helped me finish off the parts, and with some help too from
Mike Kone. Mike built the new custom front rack. Since there
were no braze-ons for a rear rack, not even the kind that
mounts in the center of the fender, we decided that it was
unlikely to have one originally.
The bike once came through GH, went to Japan where the parts
were taken off, and sold back to the States in the form in
which it reached me. That's all I know about it's history.
It took about 2 years to get it back together and were it not
for the brilliance of Mike Barry, it would still be a heap of parts.
It's in very good condition over all, no rust but it has been used.
It has a nice patina and I'd not be inclined to restore it further.
