Subject: [CR]Cinelli 1R Flex..??

Hi fellow listers,

I'm just about done with an '82 Woodrup restoration, and I took the bike out for it's first ride today... it was great! Something odd I noticed though, was that the Cinelli 1R stem I put on it seems to have a noticeable amount of flex right above the headset. The stem is the right 22.2 size, and doesn't seem to be at all loose, or moving in the steerer tube. It's inserted well below the minimum insertion mark. The wedge clamp on the bars also seems to be quite tight, and the headset is adjusted right. It looks and feels as if the stem and/or bars just flex. I've never used 1R stems before; always 1A or ttt. This particular stem came with an alu. alloy center bolt and cone, not the steel ones I'm used to seeing on the 1A. Could this be part of the flexing? Has anyone experienced this with 1R stems before? Did the 1R always come with an alu. alloy center bolt instead of steel? I don't really mind the flexy feel, but I'd like to know if it's normal with the 1R, or if it's going to break off without any warning. Thanks for any info. Cheers,

Duane Kennard
