http://www.bikexprt.com/bicycle/mytwenty.htm shows a pair of cyclebinding pedals in the lower photograph. I guess these came out in the late 80's. I think the downfall was expensive dedicated shoes that shops could not afford to stock. The web page owner says he needs to give these up when his shoes give out so swap him some SPDs! I hope trying to find a cyclebinding pedal is not another case of rocking horse manure as some of the UK contributors are fond of saying.
