Others will know more about this than I but, I think that the theory behind this was that the elliptical shape of the chainring would eliminate the "dead spot" in the typical riders pedaling rotation. I seem to recall reviewers thinking that it actually did work but felt "weird". I also seem to recall that the idea won more favor with triathletes (what idea doesn't?), than with roadies.
