Well yeah, riders probably could get rid of the steel post fast enough when the alloy one became available. Jobst Brandt told me that Campagnolo replaced his steel Campy seat post on his Cinelli with an aluminum one when it was new (pretty close to a recall move at the time).

You're still right though, like the three piece hubs (steel barrels and pressed-on aluminum alloy flanges) that were known for the flanges coming loose on the rear hub from torque. Highly sought after today... junk yesterday when the all aluminum hubs came out.
