My January issue of Cycling Plus reports that Sun Race of Taiwan bought up the Sturmey Archer patents, tooling, and spare parts, moved it all to Taiwan, and changed their name to Sun Race Sturmey Archer Inc.They intend to continue to supply S.A. gears and parts, and to grow the company. Good news for fans of hubgears. Josh Berger In a message dated 1/14/01 9:29:08 AM Eastern Standard Time, cyqlist@juno.com writes:

<< Well, I *am* on the list now. Thanks to Mark for introducing me yesterday.

I don't expect to contribute much among all these experts, not even sure how well my interests fit in here, but I will be lurking around for a while anyway, and probably learning a lot.

As those who read Mark's post yesterday will know, I am interested in old Sturmey Archer hubs. I have a bunch of GH6's, AG's, S5's, and of course AW's. My favorite is the AM ("medium ratio" 3-speed) which I think is an elegant alternate to the fixed-gear wheel on my custom road bike. A very simple and rugged mechanism. I have it set up with 46x18 for 60", 69" and 80" ratios. I used to wish I had an FM (4-speed) instead, but have come to learn that those are not as reliable or efficient.

I've used the GH6 Dynohubs on most of my bikes for many years; only quite recently have better, more powerful hub generators become available.

I also have an interest in Chicago-built Schwinns, both the fillet brazed chrome-moly and the "electro-forged" models.

And my first "10-speed" was a Sears made by Puch in Austria, which coincidentally was also discussed here recently. I've been browsing the recent archives. Mark said his was the only bike he ever had stolen. Mine was the only bike I ever "totaled" in a crash.

P.S. If this list is not the best place for Sturmey Archer interests,
can someone tell me what is? Thanks. >>
