Knowing him as well as I did, I can tell you he agonized over every detail and NEVER would have allowed a wobble or irregularity in a frame detail to leave his shop. He was so anal about such things it could drive you nuts. I remember him bending fork blades, placing them on a table as a pair, and then eyeballing them over and over from the side to ensure that the curves were exactly the same. BTW, he did not do his own paint but used the same painter for the entire time he was alive.. That being a motorcycle painter (never knew his name) who was apparently as anal as McLean. By the way, they did not use DuPont Imron as the painter was afraid of it killing him.. He used the non polyurethane DuPont Centari paints (same colors as Imron mostly though..)
