I don't like to latch down on any frame tubes with my Park shop stand and its rock crusher clamp: I prefer to attach to the seatpost. But if I do grasp a tube, I do so near the top of the seat tube so the clamp overlaps the inserted seatpost. While this could still mar the paint or decals, it won't crush the tube.
