I have the same problem with a Motobecane. Mine seemed to have a too big stem (Seems to be a standard 22.2mm. It's a GB, and I don't know if they made french size stems.) jammed in the steerer. Would that be the cause of the damage when the too large stem was tightened? Or would it have been caused by something else?

I've been asking around and calling around trying to find someone that can repair the threads on the front fork steerer tube of my '77 Motobecane. The threads are damaged about midway down and I can't get my new French headset screwed down far enough. Anyone know anyone that has the proper dies to fix this?
