I'm assuming that Tom has the "classic" versions of bar end shifters, the SunTour barcons with ratchets and the friction Campagnolo with the rubber tips. Yes, they're both identical left to right (within each brand...). I'm not sure about other brands of that era, but asymmetry in bar ends really didn't occur until indexing.
