At cycles de ORO, where we run into all sorts of things(!) we, by executive edict, never clamp the frame tubes at all. For "quickies" (procedures not requiring wrenching actions, etc.) we hook the nose of the saddle over a thick pad of shop towels (rags.) Of course it helps if you have a nice high Park stand arm or similar. The Ultimate folding repair stands work well this way too. (That's what I use in my home workshop.) A good old Mr. Sharpie marker is pressed into service if there is not enough sat post to grab.We mark the old seat post position and raise it. BTW, many folks would be wise to do this anyway so that the seat post doesn't freeze tight in the frame. A smear of grease now & then to seat post/ seat tube interface is a good thing.
