I like Mike's solution: forget the stand and hang the bike instead. There are all kinds of ways to do this, including Mike's ropes that connect to the saddle and stem.
I just got a copy of The Data Book from Rivendell, and it shows a number of early-1900s hanging methods to work on bikes. Pretty interesting stuff.
Speaking of stands and vintage frames, I just took my '84 (or so) Fuji Del Rey off my makeshift workstation (I've had it on hangers projecting from the wall) and out for a shakedown ride. A few adjustments remain to be made, but I'm pretty pleased with my first-ever repair/overhaul project. I'll never be afraid to mess with anything with races, cones and bearings again. . . .
