Dale, Proper gears may not be an issue if you are 20 or 30 something. If you are older though, like myself, it does become a consideration. A trike is a bit slower than a bicycle typically and this becomes more obvious when climbing. It's like climbing on a tandem with a weak stoker. Hence it is nice to have lower gears for the climbs while hopefully not sacrificing the high end when one rides on flatter roads. I rode the Hardscrablble Century once and passed a number of people until the route went vertical. After that everyone passed me.
