Subject: [CR]wheel/hub spacing through the ages

Does anyone know the timeline or history of the various wheel/hub spacings or even the number of different spacing dimensions used on bicycles? For instance, I've seen several old bikes listed with an 87mm front axle spacing, was that a popular standard at some point in time, and if so, how/when did the current 100mm spacing become the standard?

Cheers!
