Subject: [CR]Some NOS Bikes for sale at a local shop

A few of you may know that I have bought two 80's bikes at Cycle World in Miami. A few of you may also know that my taste runs to bikes of the mid 80's and not the 60's ( from a racer's point of view, I need 6 or 7 cogs and I like the sleekness of the more modern stuff too).

For what it's worth, today I found three bikes that may be of interest to you, in absolute New Old Stock (never ridden or owned condition). I will quote the prices listed on the tags, but I must tell you that I have a history with the owner (Mr. Lee), and in both cases I was able to buy for less than listed price. I paid $475.00 for a 54 cm Giordana that was listed for $699.00, and I paid $500.00 for a Raleigh Reynolds 531-C , all Suntour Superbe pro that was listed for $550.00. The following bikes were supposedly listed on Ebay at one time, but Mr. Lee didn't get what he wanted (this may be just a rumor told to me by one of the young wrenches who works there who hates all the 20 year old bikes that Mr Lee values). If you seriously want one of these bikes, I will go back and take pictures and answer particular questions. He must have fifty of these old bikes and he probably sells one a month while the rest clog his warehouse as he can only bring out 6 or 7 at a time ( He mostly sells Giants and Trek).

I liked the Alfredo Gios Nouvo Compact 52 cm bike. It says made in Italy and is white with black letters. The sticker is Columbus SLX but the frame is standard design and nothing compact about it. I am intrigued by the the chrome three bolt detachable rear dropout, as I didn't believe they came on mid 80's frames. I am going to guess and say that all the equipment is Campy C Record as the stuff looks aero but it is just Campy with no markings that I saw. The brakes are Campy too with the blue Jewel adjusting nut. The pedals are Look 136 ARC. The front derailleur is braze on. The brake cable routing is unfortunately top tube internal. The crank is campy 53-39 and the rear freewheel looks to be 6 speed 13-18 or maybe 14-19 (I love the race stuff). The bars are Cinelli 40 cm with Campy Stem (maybe 120 mm). The saddle is San Marco white leather. The rims are a disappointing 36 spoke 3 cross Aurora Matrix natural color box section (Matrix seems out of place but the hubs are nice low flange Campy) I didn't like the lug for the seatstays. (some kind of cap to the seatlug? The price says $1599.00 but I using the 20 - 30% rule, I would guess it might go for about $1,100.

I think that the Peugeot 58 cm Sante is a real bargain for listed $449.00 (Maybe $350.00 to $400). It is a pretty lavender and peal fade. It has index Shimano shifters with Sante front and rear derailleur and brakes and hubs and Crank. The rear cluster is 7 speed Shimano indexed. The stem is Atax and the pedals are Shimano 600 Aero platform type with a white Christophe leather strap and the adjustable feature of Shimano "aero type" pedals. The seat is white Turbo leather. The rims are MA 40 dark anodized 36 spoke. The frame says Reynolds 531, as does the fork. I like the looks and construction of this lugged frame and its better than getting a $200 beater and then having to put $300 in it just to make a rideable bike.

Lee has a Bianchi Pista track bike in a strange black dull paint contrasting with glossy Celeste forks and stays and (lugs I think). The size seems to be 56 cm and the Crank and stem say Bianchi. Tubing is Columbus. The rims are Montreal Ambrosio blk. The sticker says $699 but I would be confident in buying it for $500 or maybe less.

Cycle World's telephone number is 305-221-2123. Please do not tell Mr. Lee that I said that you can trim so much $ from all the prices. Just tell him that such and such $$$$ is all you are willing to pay. I will be happy to help you negotiate, but please don't get nasty as I have a good relationship with these people. I can take measurements and pictures, but generally there is no rush to buy as these bikes will be there next week and next month and so on.

Garth Libre in Surfside Fl, trying out the blue locktite on my Campy one bolt seatpost for tomorrow's ride. (thanks to all who helped). P.S. Lee has two late 80's Greg Lemonds and a Battaglia and a Bottechia of the same period too.
