Dave,
You could be correct about the Herse trike, I'll check with Howard on that one, but I think he would have mentioned that. We did talk about the incredible workmanship of the trike as Howard saw it.
Since you mention a 49cm Confente, that brings up a question that I will pose to anyone who might know the answer to my question. What is the smallest Confente made or known to exist. I am aware of a (perportedly) 51cm Confente track frame that is somewhere in the Bay area, I think American Cyclery in SF. I suspect that may be a counterfiet that is related to the two outed a while back; but can't confirm that unless I see the frame in person or someone can verify it's proper sequence and ser. number based on available info. Anyway, I've never seen a Confente road bike under 54cm. It was built for Jerry Fuller, who rides a bike my size (50cm c-t). I have wondered why Mario built a bike that size for a rider of my height. I think it may have something to do with Mario not wanting to cut too much off of the points of the head lugs on the inside of the head tube because the lug design was meant to lokk like a spade. That effect is lost if the lugs come together as they do on small frames. Just a theory, but I'd like to know what the smallest Confente road frame is. Anyone?
I can just imagine Faliero Masi flopping like a landed fish in his grave at the thought of converting a Special into a trike. I would guess Mario would be inclined to do the same if one converted a Confente. I certainly wouldn't want to be the person responsible for that in either case.
