Yes there was supposed to be a roller bearing headset, though I don't know
if I ever saw one "in the flesh" or just in the catalog.

I have such a beast on my (almost classic, errr) early 90's lugged Lemond.
Avocet made two models to my knowledge, appropriately named, Mod. 1 and Mod.
2. Gotta love that. I think the Mod 1 was the better of the two, but the
only real difference was that the top nut was alloy on the better model.
Both were all steel, had rubber o ring seals on the fork crown race and top
tube race, and also a rubber oring inside the top nut. Ball bearings top and
bottom, no roller bearings. Around the circumference of the cups is a black
painted (?) band with the words Avocet as well. Very nice looking. The box
they came in was neat too: like a match box that pushed out, and the parts
were in cut out grey foam. I really bought it for the box. The Chris King I
also looked at came in a plastic bag. (never mind the Avocet was sixty bucks
cheaper ;0)
