Hi All.
I hope everyone has checked out the Feb 2001 issue of Cycle Sport. If you havent, there is a great article called "Classic Classics' that covers the Top 10 Classic races of all time (in their opinion). Great shots, such as:
-A three man breakaway in the 1980 Tour of Flanders of Jan Raas (Netherlands), Francesco Moser (Italy) and Michel Pollentier (France). Of course, Pollentier was a patsy in this race, and DeVlaminck actually attacked and finished 3rd. Great pix of SR Groups and large ring hammering. Nice team Raleigh Pro of Raas.
-A Great close up of Bauer and Planckert in the final sprint of the 1990 Paris-Roubaix. Love that Team 7-11 Stuff.
-Coppi in the '46 Milan San Remo (la Primavera). He looks so at ease.
-Merckx on board a nifty Masi Special in the '69 Tour of Flanders.
-The '52 Paris-Roubaix finish. Great story of Van Steenbergen's win in the final sprint over an exhausted Coppi. Notice the cool Titan drop-stem on van SteenBergen's bike, sans water bottles - obviously chucked after the last drop.
Then there's the great story on "Mr. Paris Roubaix" - Roger deVlaminck and his years with Flandria, Brooklyn and Gis.
The photo spread of Eric Zabel's Team Pinarello on page 26 is real eye-candy. What wonderful details on this bike - how about the carbon chainstay-to-seat-lug detail, or the hollow headbadge that reveals the steerer. Not to mention the rear dropout detail;. This bike is a high point in evolution of the species, IMHO. Yes, there is good design in new, welded aluminum/carbon fiber frames.
Hope you can check it out.
