picture of the day - Guy Solente (b. 2 July 1921) racing behind a motor in the 1950s.

There's something very SciFi about motor-paced racing, especially in the old days. This is frenchman Guy Solente, who set the motorpaced record in 1955 at 74.642kph (46.4mph).

Note the tread on the moto's rear tire, roller bar mounted on back, strange cut of his leather pants and jacket, the straps holding his number, the padded leather helmet with backward-facing cups, so he could hear his rider, and those strange shoes!

Note also the LONG adjustable stem with strut connecting it to Solente's fork crown, tape securing the rear tubie to the rim in 10 places.
