More-or-less relevant contribution:
I have a '60s-vintage Terrot (bought from a kind listmember) which is decalled as being made from Peugeot tubing. It came with a 22mm seatpost and a slotted sleeve spacer; I removed the spacer, and a 25.4 seatpost fits just fine (nice tight fit, without a mallet).
