Here is what has happened now. They had nine speed downtube shifters. Ten speed came out with no corresponding shifters.

They then re-release nine speed but it has been redesigned with no downtube shifter to match. So if you want nine-speed with downtube shifters you have to use a derailleur from two years ago. Why redesign something that worked so well already?

The Syncro 1, the one that could rarely be made to work, had the little lever on the outboard side. The Syncro 2 had the knurled knob used to engage and disengage the Syncro ring. There were at least three levers like this (large-wrap, small-wrap, small-wrap with cheezy finish). Later Syncro models (still called Syncro 2?) were index-only and had a little barrel adjuster on the right side shifter. All the 8-speed ones were the same then the 9-speed ones came out, and I think they were all the same also. Perhaps they have a 10-speed one by now.
