I'm with Gilbert, with a caveat. Compliant yes, but not too compliant, lest we forget the early and infamous Ti forks. Said forks had a mind of their own.
During a recent week's ride in Texas, I was on the occaisional downhill that brought tears to the eyes, at 40 - 50 mph. The road surfaces there are like nothing most Yankees ever encounter in their natural habitat, kind of like "baby cobbles" at 1/2" to 3/4" in diameter. Riding an ex-pro Merckx with steel fork, watching the front axle dance at (high) speed was mezmerizing. I shudder to think of the challenge of controlling a rigid front end, as well as fighting a front end that followed the path of least resistance.

Sheldon (the erudite), who had the most memorable statement pertaining to "moderation in all things"?
