I'm one of those who require lots of float, and I didn't really get back into cycling until I discovered Speedplay pedals. Even with SPD's with 6-8 degrees of float, I could only ride a few miles before my knees bothered me.
So I use Speedplay X-series pedals on all my bikes, regardless of vintage, with the exception of bikes I ride casually, where I go with flat pedals and sometimes clips and straps (but I leave the straps loose at all times).
