Thanks to a tip from the list, I'm using Diadora Voyagers this spring with my toe clip bikes, and find them very satisfactory. The shoe is a SPD style, but has a smoother sole and pedal cage slots so it's designed to work with clip and strap pedals too. They use a two velcro strap closure (heresy), but are nice and black, and have a thinish sole that fits well inside toe clips, including both quill style pedals and platform style pedals. Comfort/stiffness is good, but not on par with a full race shoe. Longest ride so far is 50 miles with MKS platform pedals, with good comfort. The front velcro closure strap does sometimes snag the toe strap as it is inserted, but can be cleared when you reach down to snug the strap anyway. Price at my LBS was $75. I may convert more of my fleet over to toe clips, thanks to these shoes.

I would have loved to try the SIDI shoes Rivendell sells but they don't come big enough for me.

I have two bikes set up with SPD pedals. I like them because you can walk around normally and can use shoe covers in the winter, but worry about foot support on super long rides.

On 70+ mile rides, I still use Look pedals.

No wonder I have so many bike shoes.

I still miss my old Dutch Medalist shoes. Steel sole covered with leather, perforated black uppers, nail on cleats and absolutely the most comfortable "toes no go numb" shoes I ever had. But when they fell apart I couldn't replace them and everything since is plastic soled and not as good. Bah!
