I agree with Carlo, of the modern shoes the Sidi Dominators with SPDs are the most useful (you can actually walk in them) and look OK, if not great, from afar when used with a vintage bike.
When I want to look my retro best I wear a pair of Duegi woods which I found NOS a couple years ago, though my local cobbler has installed some low heels on them.
