Subject: [CR]Introduction -- Keith Mayton

Greetings to all of you!

I began riding road bikes in 1970 at the age of 12 when my father helped me buy a Gitane Interclub to replace a Schwinn Varsity. I rode local (Columbus, Ohio AYH) club rides and centuries, and eventually bought a Mercian Professional, which I still own and ride. In 1974, I started racing as a junior (Franlin Bicycle Club Incorporated, or "FBCI"), and did well locally. My dad bought me a Peugeot track bike for Christmas that year, and I still have that bike too. It was the most expensive gift he ever got me -- a real sacrifice for him.

By 1977 I discovered girls and art, and cycling took a back seat for about 20 years. In the mid-1990s I got back into it, and, although I owned a Trek 5200 for a while, I always gravitated toward the Campy-equipped lugged steel bikes that I drooled over as a kid in the 70s.

In addition to the Mercian and Peugeot, I have a 1971 Raleigh International, a 1976 Paramount P-15, a 1983/84 Campy NR equipped Lotus Competition (Japanese Italian wannabe), and an early Campy NR equipped Cannondale (sorry). I also have some early to mid-80s lugged steel Treks, and several British 3-speeds, but I won't get into that stuff unless asked.

Although my focus has been bikes from the era when I rode as a kid, I'd love to explore the world of rarer pre-bike boom road bikes. I have limited means, however, so the process will be slow, careful, and with an eye toward bargains.

My riding consists of commuting to work (28 miles round trip) and local club rides and centuries, including the annual and very retro Tour of the Scioto River Valley("TOSRV"), and the Columbus Fall Challenge.

My riding buddies have given me the name "Lugs" because of my love for older road bikes.

I look forward to chatting with you!

Best,

Keith "Lugs" Mayton
