I've used a couple different epoxys, but the best thing I've used is the really hard Bondo. Many of the epoxys don't bond to the metal very well, but Bondo works great. I've also seen people make a thin plate out of hard plastic and glue it to the damaged plate. Those are the best methods I've seen so far.
