The other day a new employee -- she's in her early 20s -- walked into my office and about flipped when she saw my commuting bike, a '75 Motobecane Grand Jubilee. "Wow, I'd love an old Motobecane!" "Look at those lugs!" She was also ga ga for the Peugeot track bike handing on the office wall.

She explained that a lot of her friends are bike messengers. I talk with these folks pretty regularly, and check out their bikes whenever I see one. A lot of them have admired the bikes in my office.

It's the same across the U.S. -- many of these professional cyclists have traded in their aluminum mountain bikes for fixed-free single speeds with cowhorn bars. Most often, they go with a lugged steel frame from the 70s or early 80s. I think this group has the potential to become a new crop of vintage enthusiasts.
