Good question, since I've now finished surfboard shopping (the main reason I've been quiet the last few days) and am now going to work on my fixed gear. I like using 1/8" chains and 5/32" rings since it makes less noise and are much stronger, so I've done a bit of experimenting in the past with "master-links" too. Anyway, I have seen 2 "master-links" fail, but it was only in weird cases with lots of back pressure and weird torque. So it's really nothing to worry about; I'd worry more about using 5/32" chains since I've seen quite a few (6 or 7 total) break during fixed road use. Lastly, 1/8" chains some really nicely chromed for $5.
If that wasn't classic content enough, the fixed-gear I'm working on is the Lotus Supreme I wrote about a few months back and I'm putting a late-60's early-70's Campy road crank on it and it's being built so I can have somethig to ride on Chuck's Rose Bowl classic rides. This is of course if I don't turn into one of those surfing freaks.
