It can be awfully tough to isolate exactly what part is making noise as you pedal. Some items I've misdiagnosed as a crankset issue: Seat post binder, saddle clamp, toe clips, handle bar clamp. I've even had a saddle creak as I rode, causing me to go over all the nuts & bolts before a saddle change solved the problem. Try those before you start doing anything expensive to the crank set.
