I never worked at a shop that sold Peugeots (in my neck of the woods, the early '70s prices were $87.50 for the UO-8 and $158 for the PX-10.)
I can't agree about them being "OK right out of the box" however, in particular they had a common problem of the saddle clamp being installed upside down, leading to the dreaded "Agda hump" when the seatpost starts to poke up against the leather. I believe this was major contributor to the demise of leather saddles. The Agda wasn't all _that_ bad, when you were sitting on the leather instead of the steel.
