I'm not a doctor but here is some information from The Tour De France Complete Book Of Cycling (1990) that might be related to your doctor's comments: "Pro cyclists who have spent a good part of their adult years racing and training day-in and day-out can experience a negative effect from an enlarged heart when they retire... Lucien Gillen, from Luxembourg. a great all-around pro cyclist in the fifties and early sixties, had developed a heart nearly 20% larger than normal for his size... As soon as his racing career ended... Gillen's doctor gave him an unusual prescription: "Ride your bike 20 miles every day for the rest of your life." Fred
