Where do you stop though in deeming any particular construction method "off-limits" ? For what it's worth I'd have to say that if it fit's the racing/touring/club 'lightweight' criteria (i.e. It's not a Dreadnought) and it's within the CR list time frame, it's surely open for discussion here.
Given that many of the more innovative "lightweight" builders and companies were experimenting with alternatives to steel / lugs, it would be unfair to exclude them. You don't need to like welded frames or for that matter Carbon-fibre or lightweight aluminium alloys but like disc brakes they were around long before 1984'ish...... and have to be appreciated and seen in context with what made up probably 97% (at a guess) of the frames made at the time.
