In 1966 at the National Sprint Championships in Northbrook, IL during training Mike Hiltner would sit on Jim Rossis wheel in a full out sprint. Jim was the defending National Sprint Champion. Mike was 13 and an Intermediate (ages 11-13). In that age group they were limited to either a 72 or 75 inch gear. That is a 48x18 or 50x18. Jim was riding around a 96-inch gear or a 50x14. Mikes legs were a blur. Now I cant say what his cadence was, but I would imagine it was above 150. Now remember, it was only for about 200 meters or about 11 seconds. Mike went on to be one of the top riders in the country and brought home a bronze medal in the Pan-Am games and was on the 1972 Olympic Team. The boy could spin!
Oh, BTW, both Jim and Mike were on Schwinn Paramounts, black and sky blue respectively, with chrome lugs.
