Last time I saw "Butch" Martin was here at Snowshoe about 1990. He did a three-day event based out of here and had John Howard come to be the jackrabbit. They road about 80 miles a day with 3 to 4 big mountain climbs each day. You have taken me back just mentioning his name. I must relate this one story of the first time I met Butch. It was 1963 Summerville, NJ. An unknown rider in the junior field broke away and no one saw him. There was speculation that this guy had been lapped as how could an unknown do this to a field that contained some of the best riders in the country. The next big race this rider proved himself to anyone who doubted his ability and his name was Butch Martin. By the way, the Martins and my folks became best of friends and we had many cookouts during the big out of town races as well as having them over to the house during the National Capital Open. He also had a younger brother whose name escapes me at this time.
At the time he was here he was getting into building these events that werent races, but challenges such as the one he did here.
