"In the 70's I wrote for a now-forgotten paper called Competitive Cycling." David Feldman
How could anyone forget COMPETITIVE CYCLING, or 'CC' as it was sometimes known? Marvin Muchracher, Sundown Slim, Captain America, the 'treetrunks of the month' leg photo contest, a sensitive bike poem accompanying a photo of a Strawberry bike hanging from a tree limb, and reassurance that interval training doesn't cause hairy palms!
I ran across it when I bought (don't laugh) a pair of used Puma cycling shoes from a guy named Mark Ocker at the touring shop in Corvallis, OR. He picked up a copy to show me an article featuring his performance in a local race. I ended up buying a whole pile of backissues ('74 to '77 or so?) out of a basket beside the parts counter.
I still have 'em, although newsprint tabeloids don't withstand the passage of time so well and they are but a little way from dust at this point. Lotsa pictures of Ron Skarin and the Stetinas, ads for Follis and Dura-Ace, even an early ad for the 'Zeus Competition' bicycle that started my addiction.
Of course, another favorite part of CC was the overhyped-yet-intentionally-pathetic subscription come-ons: Want to know what the 'heavies' read? CC! CC! CC!
