Friends, The recent spate of questions regarding cottered cranks caused me to wonder about a couple of really nice '60s era cottered cranksets that I remember but can't identify. I'm going to do my best to describe them and perhaps someone can help identify the manu- facturers. One resembled a TA CycloTourist cotterless crank, with the same sort of bolt circle and chainrings. The arms were made from steel, though, and I believe that the arms of the cottered TA were aluminum alloy. Anyway, I've seen two of these - in both cases many years ago. The first time was in a bike shop in Quebec city. (I know that's not much help.) The next time was in the window of Larry Black's College Park Bicycles, not long after it opened. I'll never forget the bike. The lettering on the down tube said something like "Jocko Some-one-or-another Rond Von Europe" and had flags from various Western European countries. Perhaps Larry remembers this bike and the crankset. Perhaps it's in his basement... The other crankset actually came on my '69 Atala, which I've mentioned a couple of times. Unfortunately, I was not able to replace the chainrings so I had to replace it and eventually it was lost. Anyway, it had a 3 arm bolt circle of about 70mm. Bolted to the ends of these arms were slender "Y" shaped arms to which the chainrings were attached. The bolt circle of the chainrings seemed to be about 130mm but they used 6 bolts to attach to the "Y" shaped pieces. All the bolts went into sleeve nuts and used allen keys - just like the stack bolts on any good crankset. Each arm had a single "S" engraved on its surface. Simplex? Stronglight? Solida? Does anyone have pictures of good cottered cranks from this era? Best regards, Fred
