VELO RENDEZVOUS
Dates: October 6 and 7 (follows Las Vegas Interbike Show by three days).

Pasadena, California, fifteen minutes north east of downtown Los
Angeles.
Note: Mt. Wilson (elev. 5200 ft) pictured is five air miles from
Pasadena (elev. 750 ft).

Venues:
La Casita del Arroyo, Pasadena -- Built in 1933, this "little house"
which is constructed of stones from the famous Pasadena Arroyo and wood
from the 1932 Los Angeles Olympic Velodrome (built inside the Rose Bowl
Stadium for the Olympics). It's nestled in the rustic Arroyo Seco close
by the Rose Bowl. The architect was Myron Hunt (Rose Bowl Stadium,
Huntington Hotel [now Ritz-Carlton], Pasadena City Hall and Pasadena
Library.

Schedule: October 6, Saturday -- Velo Symposium (guest speakers, discussion and bike display), 10:30 am to 2:30 pm at Casita del Arroyo (lunch will be catered), followed by a vintage ride in the afternoon and dinner at a local restaurant. Speakers so far: -Brian Baylis on building frames with just a file, a vice, and a torch with some examples of his work. -Brett Horton on collecting historically significant jerseys, photos, and posters with some items from his collection. -Rex Gephart on a photo visit to the Masi Workshop under the Vigorelli Velodrome in Milan. -Seth Finkelstein with a show and tell on derailleurs from the 1930s, 40s and 50s. -Dennis Crowley on Pasadena cycling lore (for example: Tournament of Roses and Rose Parade started out as a bicycle race and bicycle parade). Tentative speakers so far: -Owen Mulholland on the Tour Legends, The Giants of the Road, and his upcoming book on vintage racing history. -Ted Ernst with his amazing scrapbooks of six day bike racing and personal racing career.
October 7, Sunday -- Vintage bike ride at 9 am from Brookside Park, followed at 10:30 am by vintage bike show, parts exchange, and BBQ picnic. The food and drink will be provided. The bike show will be judged by the bike show entrants (a tally of three votes: first, second and third choice). The parts exchange will be a very low-key swap meet, since we will be in a grassy, secluded picnic area.
Price: $30 for two days that includes a catered lunch Saturday, BBQ Lunch Sunday plus admissions to all events. Late entry after September 22 will be $35.
Event Hotel:
Group rates are being arraigned at the Old Pasadena Courtyard by
Marriott hotel. This is a very nice, new hotel built in a style
reminiscent of the 1900s Arts & Crafts Movement and is located in Old
Pasadena one mile from both days' events. Highly recommended!!! Rate to
be $114 per night, single or double; details to follow.

Old Town Pasadena:
Old Pasadena is today what Westwood Village was a decade ago: L.A.'s
premier pedestrian neighborhood, where car-weary Los Angelenos can
actually stroll, window-shop, and dine in a relaxed outdoor, urban
setting. The neighborhood dates back to the 1870's and the entire
district is on the National Register of Historic Places. There are over
70 restaurants in the eight block area.

Airports: Burbank (BUR) Airport is conveniently close by (12 mi to the west), and is recommended! Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is 40 mi to the south west. Long Beach Airport (LGB) is 30 mi to the south.
