This is absolutely dreadful news. My beautiful full chrome 1983 Rene Herse with camping racks, My 1980 Cycles Villigran Full Chrome Tandem, My Full Chrome 1966 Robin Hood three speed roadster, The chrome forks, stays and nervex lugs of my 1971 Raleigh International are on the eve of destruction and are soon to be ugly.....I must take action right away.

ring...ring... Mr. Bayliss, please.....how many quid (£) to properly remove this dreadful shiny stuff and paint these bikes some sort of neutral color that will not scratch off? Well you need to know these bikes are currently on deaths door. That much; eh, well I must save them. Sound fair to me.

ring...ring... Alex Moulton please. Oh Alex; could you please send me one of your £4000 quid stainless jobs. I don't want to bother with that troublesome chrome. Yes, ye s, over twenty years without a problem doesn't give me that much peace of mind either. I'd like to buy for the long term. No, I don't want to give it to my grandchildren, I'm thinking long-term durability here; yes, my future clone when the technology is proven if you must know. Oh Alex, how is that lovely full chrome 1955 Hetchins you started serious cycling on. The last time I saw the Hetchin's looked almost new. Oh I see; you are still worried about it down the road. I agree, stainless is the future.

Waterfords are beautiful and desireable because of the elegance of their simplicity.

I personally like Stainless for it's long term beauty but it doesn't have the shine. Chrome like paint needs to be properly applied and cared for. It's hard to say on bikes but there might be more bad paint on bikes overall (throughout the market place) than bad chrome. Not all chrome is wonderful, but good chrome is worth a bit extra, stainless too. Good chrome gets ugly slow. Environment can hurt too, a lot.

My question on stainless lugs. How do you extend the stainless to the main tubes and stays without magic?

All the Best,

Gilbert "shiny bikie, that does not scatchie" Anderson

Note: Ken Denny had a gorgeous selection of chrome/nichel (one polished alloy) bikes at Larz Anderson to die for if you got a chance.

The Waterford decals, like the Paramount decals of old are also elegant and simple.

But I'll agree that Waterford needs a nice headbadge ...

Very nice of course, I agree on the Waterford. Gilbert
