Like most everything, it depends, but it's usually possible to get some brake to fit. The key variable is what brakes the bike was originally made to use, long reach or short reach. If the original bike took short reach brakes and the brake pads were in the top of the slots, then a switch to 700c wheels may only require repositioning the brake pads in bottom of the slots. If the brake pads can't be lowered enough, then a switch to long reach brakes should do the job.

However many 27 inch wheeled bikes take long reach brakes. If so, (and repositioning the pads doesn't give enough reach) you may have to dig up a pair of extra long reach center pull brakes. I had this problem on a old touring bike. Long reach Shimano 600 side pulls didn't reach, but a pair of Universal center pulls did the trick. The only problem was finding center pull cable stops for the headset and seat post binder bolt, and switching to a shorter stack height head set to make room for the front cable stop. Also, the stops are becoming rare with the dominance of V brakes and subsequent rarity of cantilevers, but most shops still have some lying around, and they certainly can be ordered.

Hi, I have a question, that I am not sure has an answer! I am looking at building a fixed gear bike and have seen a couple of old road frames that take 27" wheels. Can you use 700c with standard reach brakes to get the needed reach? Or would you need drop-bolts? Or can't the situation be generalized? Thanks for any advice! Dave In snowy Maine
