Avocet came out with a touring shoe in 1982. I still have a pair that I do not wear very often.
We had a mechanic at our shop that rode his bike to Alaska, and wore a pair of those shoes. One morning after he got back, I went outside the shop to read the paper on a bench. The shoes were on the ground nearby, and man, they really did smell bad. They seemed to soak up foot smells.
I rode 1983 Avocet cranks on my Trek 560 up until August 2000. They also used a 144 BCD, and used a smaller square on the BB spindle.
